MARY ELLEN GEORGE AWARD Barbara
Irli, Coordinator, SI North San Mateo County The Mary Ellen George Award has been established by Soroptimist International, Sierra Pacific Region as an ongoing award in recognition of S club members, who, while maintaining satisfactory academic standards, have contributed significantly to their schools, their communities, and their S clubs. This award is for high school seniors in the Sierra Pacific Region who have been members of the S Club for at least one year prior to submission of the application. The applicant can apply for either academic or vocational/technical training. The award is named in honor of Mary Ellen George, who was not only the primary benefactor who made possible the MEG award, but also a long time Soroptimist of Soroptimist International of San Jose, and a Past Governor of the Southwestern Region in the 1960's. A leader in her community for many years, Mary Ellen served as the Director of the Volunteer Bureau of Santa Clara, implementing many new programs to serve the surrounding communities. She decided to establish the MEG award because of her dedicated interest in young people and their development as community-minded citizens. Mary Ellen and her husband, Al, had no children of their own and took pleasure in helping our S Club young people fulfill their dreams. During the last few years of her life, Mary Ellen was not able to have much hands-on participation in the award process, but she was an honorary member of the committee; the committee sought her input, and her spirit continues to be very much a part of the Meg Award. The MEG committee consists of: The Sierra Pacific Regional Committee Chair, who is appointed by the Regional Governor, the Sierra Pacific presiding Governor, and the Sierra Pacific Governor-elect. This award is for high school seniors in the Sierra Pacific Region who have been members of the S Club for at least one year prior to submission of the application. The applicant can apply for either academic or vocational/technical training. You will need Acrobat Reader to open and print the Application.
