Soroptimist International of Burlingame-San Mateo-Mid Peninsula ("SI-BSMMP") proudly supports the efforts of individuals in our area to improve their lives and the lives of others around them through their efforts. During our club year, we work hard to provide the funding for the awards described below. The awards are presented at our Awards Luncheon in May. AWARDS WOMEN'S OPPORTUNITY AWARD Each year, Soroptimist International of BSMMP and other Soroptimist clubs across the world give Women's Opportunity Awards to women seeking to better their lives. Our club awards $1,000 to a woman who is the primary wage earner for her family to help her improve her employment prospects through education and skills training. Our club winner advances to higher levels of competition within the Soroptimist organization.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR WOMEN AWARD The Soroptimist Making a Difference for Women Award honors women who are making extraordinary differences in the lives of other women through volunteer or professional efforts. Each year Soroptimist International of BSMMP honors a local woman who has worked to improve the lives of women and girls, has had a significant impact on the lives of women and girls, and inspires and encourages other women. Our club winner advances to higher levels of competition within the Soroptimist organization.
VIOLET RICHARDSON AWARD The Violet Richardson Award honors young women between the ages of 14 and 17 for their volunteer efforts. Our club winner is honored with a $250 award and advances to higher levels of competition within the Soroptimist organization. NANCY FRANK 2ND YEAR WOMEN'S OPPORTUNITY AWARD Awarded to the winner of the Women's Opportunity Award in the year following her receipt of that award if she still meets the Women's Opportunity Award criteria. The award honors Nancy Frank, former President and long time active member of our club. ANGELA DUNN ADVENTURE AWARD This supplement to the Women's Opportunity Award honors Angela Dunn, President of Soroptimist International of BSMMP 2005-2006. Angela Dunn's children, Shane and Sasha, sponsor this $1,000 award to our club's Women's Opportunity Award winner for a vacation for her and her children. Shane, Sasha and Angela agree that their best memories are the ones when they were having an "Adventure" together.
SCHOLARSHIPS SUSAN JEAN COCKCROFT MEMORIAL 4- YEAR RENEWABLE SCHOLARSHIP Soroptimist International of BSMMP awards this $1,000 scholarship, renewable for 3 years to a total of $4,000, to a student who resides in Belmont, Burlingame, Foster City, Hillsborough, San Carlos or San Mateo and who will enter an accredited bachelor's degree program (BA or BS) immediately after high school graduation. The student must demonstrate financial need, outstanding scholarship, a commitment to community service and appropriate educational and career goals. The scholarship honors Ms. Cockcroft, an active member of our Soroptimist club from 1982 - 1994. COLLEGE OF SAN MATEO SCHOLARSHIPS Soroptimist International of BSMMP is a proud supporter of student achievement at the College of San Mateo. Each year our club awards three scholarships to College of San Mateo students who strive to better their lives through education and community service, and who need financial aid to achieve their educational goals.
RUTH H. WESTON SCHOLARSHIP $500.00. Awarded to a student with educational goals in occupational therapy, nursing, medicine or dentistry. The student must have a 2.75 (B-) grade point average or better and major in science (physical or natural), physical education, recreation or pre-physical therapy. This scholarship honors Ruth H. Weston, President of SI of BSMMP from 1968-69. Mrs. Weston served as Dean at College of San Mateo and taught physical education there. Mrs. Weston was instrumental in starting our scholarship program at CSM. ADA R. BEVERIDGE SCHOLARSHIP $500.00 Awarded to a student with a 3.0 (B) grade point average or better majoring in English, drama or any of the humanities. This scholarship honors Ada R. Beveridge, who served as Director of Community Relations at College of San Mateo and taught speech and drama and humanities there for 34 years. She was an active supporter of SI of BSMMP and was honored with our Women of Achievement Award in 1966. ANN BRUBAKER SCHOLARSHIP $500.00 Awarded to a student in a vocational program at College of San Mateo who shows promise through success in overcoming obstacles. student. This scholarship honors Anne Brubaker, President when SI-BSMMP was chartered in 1940. |
