SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL of CALAVERAS COUNTY SATURDAY of SERVICE, 2005

Women’s Crisis Center Receives Saturday of Service Spring Cleanup

Soroptimist International of Calaveras County participated in Saturday of Service, a worldwide Soroptimist event on March 5, 2005. Their community service project was to beautify the landscaped areas at the Calaveras Women’s Crisis Center in San Andreas. Twenty-two Soroptimists and family members rolled up their sleeves to rake, weed, hoe, prune, and mulch the landscaping around the Center. Flowers were then planted to brighten the Center’s entrance. “Grant funding meets most of the Center’s maintenance needs, but not the landscaping maintenance,” Kelli Fraguero, Executive Director of the Center, reported.

Calaveras County Master Gardeners Jim and Mary Beth LeRoy, and Wendy Palmer, also a Soroptimist, were present to advise and direct the landscape cleanup. Before leaving for the day, the Soroptimist women presented the Center with a park bench, and each resident from the shelter received a flowering plant and balloons were given to the children. The project totaled 150 woman hours of service.

Every year Soroptimists throughout the world participate in Saturday of Service community projects on the first Saturday in March, improving the lives of women and girls in their local communities. All enjoy the fun and share in the dignity of service as they come together to support women and girls. Soroptimist International Calaveras County has provided service in Calaveras County since 1947.
