SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL of GROVELAND
FAMILY WELLNESS FAIRE

What Is the Groveland Family Wellness Faire?
It's the local Soroptimist club’s signature award-winning service project, serving the southern Tuolumne County community for the past five years. It’s a one-day event held at which was originally held at Mary Laveroni Park (formerly Wayside Park) in Groveland, and is now being held on the campus of Tenaya Elementary School. During the event, local residents and visitors alike can receive health education, medical screenings, and other valuable health related services at minimal or no cost to them.

What Health Education Is Presented There?
Various health agencies and non-profit organizations provide education about all sorts of health issues including but not limited to breast cancer early detection, the health effects of tobacco use, safety issues around the home and many others. Issues affecting women and girls are given primary importance, and a Women’s Pavilion was recently added giving women an opportunity to watch Breast Cancer Screening video in privacy. A physician or nurse is on hand to answer general questions relating to women's health.

What Kind of Medical Screenings Are Offered?
Eye health exams, blood pressures, cholesterol testing, hearing tests, PSA (prostate) screening for men, and osteoporosis screening are just a few of the services provided. A recent addition has been the full lipid panel and thyroid screening at a minimal cost.

Are Health and Safety Issues Discussed?
Gun safety around the home, fire safety, kitchen and cooking safety, and domestic violence prevention are some of the health and safety issues that have been presented at the Family Wellness Faire in the past years.

Why Do Folks Attend the Family Wellness Faire?
Even if you regularly visit your physician for wellness check-ups, there are still many educational and preventive services available to you at this event. Many attendees have commented that they learned a valuable fact, which helped them in their personal lives.

What Else Happens at the Family Wellness Faire?
There are activities for children designed to educate them on nutrition or safety issues. The Delta Blood Bank is usually on site during the event to accept donations of blood for the blood band. There are “goodie bags” for all the give-aways and materials distributed by the various vendors at the Faire. There is a food booth, which serves wonderful fruit cups, sandwiches and beverages at nominal or no-cost to the public.

When Is the Family Wellness Faire Held?
The event is normally held during the spring or early summer. This year, the event was held on Tuesday, June 14, 2005. The date has not yet been set for 2006.
