President Betsy Peterson - Transending Women - Article in the Lodi News-Sentinel

The Lodi chapter of Soroptimist International strives to help women become the best they can be
By Pam Bauserman
News-Sentinel Staff Writer

Betsy Peterson of Lodi has been working as the assistant to the chief of police for 18 years. During that time, she has been through three chiefs and has seen the department go through the process of going computerized. The lifelong Lodi resident loves staying busy and enjoys helping the community. For this reason, she has been a member of the Soroptimist Club for 16 years. Peterson was recently installed as president of the Soroptimist International of Lodi.

Q: How did you get involved with the Soroptimist Club?
A: The assistant to the city manager, Janet Keeter, was a member. She asked me if I was interested in joining. I was and I've really enjoyed it. I have been a member for 16 years and I've met a lot of nice people.

Q: What have you personally accomplished while being in the club?
A: I think it's getting a sense of the involvement with the community and seeing it from a different dimension. Some members used to be teachers and it's interesting seeing them in a different light.

Q: What are some of the changes you have gone through with each new chief?
A: Each chief has their own particular way they like to have things done and what needs to be accomplished, so you adjust to support their goals.

Q: What do you do as assistant to the chief?
A: I do the budget, grants and crime statistics. I handle purchasing, the most wanted, workers' compensation and other special activities.

Q: What do you enjoy about the job?
A: I like the diversity of the profession. I always get to work on something different. There is never a dull moment - always lots of things going on.

Q: What is the most exciting thing that has happened here?
A: Probably some of the different cases that have occurred. They are interesting.

Q: What did you do prior to this job?
A: I worked for SMUD for eight years. I did office work. I was the administrative assistant for the CEO.

Q: What goals do you hope to accomplish as Soroptimist president?
A: I hope to keep us on a sound fiscal track, to develop a new long-term project and to partner with another organization in town.

Q: What do you enjoy most about this club?
A: The feeling of helping the community, and that the money raised stays here in town. The fund-raisers go to help the community 100 percent.

Q: What do you never tire of?
A: I never tire of being busy. I like to have things to do and meeting people and having friends.

Q: Describe yourself in three words.
A: I'm friendly, a hard worker and I follow through with things.

Q: What are your future goals professionally?
A: I plan on staying with the police department until I retire.

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: I love to work with my dogs. I have three mini schnauzers. In October, I will be starting to show one of them.

Q: Which celebrity would you most like to meet?
A: I would have loved to have met Mother Teresa. She did so much for people.

2007 AWARDS

Womens Opportunity Award

Violet Richardson Award

Our deserving recipient of the Violet Richardson award for 2007 is Anne Heberle. She is a senior at Tokay High School. She was awarded $500 from SI Lodi. Anne has been an active member of Girl Scouts since first grade. Through Girl Scouts she learned how important community service is, and how one person can make a difference. She has been a volunteer swim coach for the city of Lodi for the past 5 summers, working with 7 and 8 year olds teaching them swimming and water safety. . Anne has also joined both the Conflict Management Team at Tokay which helps to promote peaceful solutions to problems between students, and the Link Crew which serves to assist freshmen in making their adjustment to the new high school environment and its demands. In addition to this extensive list, Anne has volunteered as Science Olympiad Event Coordinator for the Pentathlon, Hot Air Balloon Race and Science Bowl. Her father Ron Heberle and grandmother Sara Heberle attended the luncheon when she received her award. Germaine Burke presented the award. Sara is the leader of the Girl Scout troup and accepted the $100 for the service organization.

Making a Difference for Women Award

Gloria Stemmler is the SI Lodi recipients of the Making a Difference for Women award for 2007. She also is the recipient of the Sierra Pacific region award of $500 for her organization. Gloria established a program called L’Chayim in Galt, a place for women to spend time, find resources, learn craft skills and give back to the community. The name is Hebrew for “to toast”.

L’Chayim began ten years ago when Gloria Stemmle, began collecting pennies, because she wanted to help women who lived in the Galt area. Two years ago, Stemmler wanted to make a place where women could go, to meet a variety of needs. Gloria found a location that would be suitable in one of the strip malls. Gloria, with the help of several people, has been able to pay the rent on the space, by having a hot dog stand at one of the local supermarkets. The center thrives on donations and other types of fundraisers such as a recently held golf tournament.

L’Chayim is a safe place for all women to come. “They come in because they’re lonely, either because of divorce, widowed, have an empty nest, or simply find they want to volunteer to help out others in the community. They come in because they have needs”, according to Edie Shaffhausen, CEO. According to Ms. Shaffhausen, the “idea person” and the “person who makes things happen” is Gloria Stemmler. It was Gloria’s idea to have the women who come to the center be taught by volunteers to sew, quilt, and crochet, skills that women can take home. The current service project is making Afghans for an orphanage in Mexico. Stemmler, who started a Girls’ Guide, will take the Afghans and will be going to Mexico with other women from the area Girl Scout Council. Gloria was instrumental in having the center volunteers make baby hats and blankets for the Pregnancy Resource Center in Lodi. The ladies also make toiletry bags that are distributed once a month to t! he homeless. Women in need of shelter, food or counseling can come in for support and learn about other resources that are available.

Gloria started the Meals on Wheels in the Galt area, to insure that the senior population had a way of getting food, but also as a way to have someone checking on their safety and well-being. Another project that Gloria began was the Medical Transportation Service. So many people in the Galt area did not have a way to get to their medical appointments, so Gloria arranged a schedule of volunteers who transport individuals to their medical appointments. Gloria introduced SHARE (Self Help and Resources Exchange) food program to Galt several years ago. Many people, she said, had never been exposed to a food co-op before, and others had never been exposed to the concept of doing community service without receiving pay.

L’Chayim is hoping to foster a community of hospitality with dignity and love. And to respect the basic human need for love and acceptance.

Gloria is truly a woman who is making a difference for women and girls in the community of Galt.
