Soroptimist donates dozens of instruments to Lodi School District!

Soroptimist International of Lodi was recently awarded a $3,375.00 Lodi Arts Commission Grant to continue with the music project we started last year. This year’s money is earmarked to place two classroom rhythm instrument sets at each of the 30+ elementary schools in Lodi Unified School District. Further, Soroptimist of Lodi will sponsor a teacher in-service to work with elementary teachers and give them ideas as to how to use the instruments in their language arts and math lessons. The idea is to further integrate music into the child’s learning experience.

Jan Alexander, a second grade teacher from Davis School, with a degree in Language Arts and Music, has agreed to be the Language Arts person on our In-service Team. Wendy Kirby-Alexander (no relation to Jan), of Kindermusik of Lodi, will fill the spot as Music person and the team will be rounded out by Paige Blevins, a credentialed math teacher. Each of these people is donating their time to this project. Music Box is currently researching prices on classroom sets of instruments and will be placing an order on our behalf this month. We hope to hold the in-service later this spring. Also, the deadline for the next grant application process is January 29th and we are currently writing another grant to add musical instrument to the band library.
