Soroptimist International of Lodi Donates Percussion Instruments

October 30, 2004 by Pam Trassare, Soroptimist International of Lodi

The second phase of an ongoing project by Soroptimist International of Lodi was implemented this week by music educators in Lodi Unified School District.

Soroptimist International Lodi presented the 29 traveling LUSD music teachers with 60 sets of classroom percussion instruments. The 24 piece instrument sets which included triangles, sand blocks, claves, bells, guiros, and cymbals, will be used in kindergarten through 6th grade classrooms at every elementary school in LUSD, a total of 30 schools.

Soroptimist International of Lodi began supporting the LUSD music program two years ago by creating a lending library of musical instruments to benefit students unable to incur the cost of an instrument yet interested in pursuing musical study. The library of 61 instruments includes violins, violas, clarinets, flutes, coronets and trombones. Funding for the original project was made possible through club fund-raising and generous grants from The Lodi Arts Council and community members. This year’s donation was funded in part through another Lodi Arts Council grant and generous support from The Music Box of Lodi. Soroptimist International of Lodi has been given another grant for this fiscal year and will be adding more instruments to the lending library in the Spring. Anyone interested in donating to this musical project can contact Pam Trassare or talk to any Soroptimist International of Lodi member.
