SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL of LODI Saturday of Service 2004

March 6, 2004 is designated as Soroptimist “Saturday of Service.” This is a day when Soroptimist Clubs all over the United States join together for a day of hands-on service in their respective communities. Members of the Lodi Soroptimist club put on their red shirts and working gloves and spent their “Saturday of Service” working at the Sunshine Trail at Micke Grove Park.

Fourteen members participated in this wonderful project. Here are LaVerne Burns, Sue Kiminkimen, Carol Maas, Maria Howard, Kathy Ferrero, President Merry Donahue, Betsy Peterson, Toni White, Helen Tretheway, Ora Hoover, Bev Lacy.

The beautiful Sunshine Trail will be featured in Sunset Magazine sometime during the year. Our club has funded the growth and development of the trail since 1971 (over 30 years) and has invested several hundred thousand dollars in the project. The Sunshine Trail is a 1.2 acre garden with a 1250 foot trail especially designed for visitors with visual impairments or other handicaps. The trail represents a trip across California, from the redwood forest, over the coast range, across the valley grassland, then up and over the Sierra. Native plants, rocks, a waterfall, a delta peat bog and other special features greet the visitors who can explore with senses other than sight. Our members will replace plants which are indigenous to each of the zones. Trees that were planted as saplings now tower over 30 feet tall in this beautiful garden.
