In 1990, observing that teenage mothers were a significant part of San Joaquin Countys overall high school dropout rate, S.I. Tracy Daybreak began its MOMS Program (More Opportunities for Mothers through Soroptimist). This scholarship program, which finances childcare, has played a major role in the successful high school graduation of more than 50 teen mothers. Forty percent of the program participants have graduated from high school, and some have gone on to junior college or vocational school for further training. Program costs during the last nine years have exceeded $24,000all raised through efforts of club members. In addition to providing childcare, the programs creator and coordinator has provided counseling and encouragement for these young women, in conjunction with staff from the citys high school, adult school, and alternative high school. This program earned S.I. Tracy Daybreak $1,000 from Soroptimist International. Breast Cancer Awareness: S.I. Tracy/Daybreak is now partnered with Sutter Tracy Community Hospital with the Power of Pink. We will paint the town pink by being the organizer and promoter of the sale of pink ribbons throughout the City of Tracy. Hospital will pay the start up costs and do the publicity. Local businesses will be selling the pink paper ribbons to hang in their store fronts and lobbies. Ribbons may be purchased for a minimum of a $5 contribution in honor of those who have had breast cancer. Funds collected benefit the Sutter Tracy Breast Project to promote community education and early detection of breast cancer. Annual Run for the Ribbon: Held annually in October. S.I. Tracy/Daybreak's participation in the annual run is as registration volunteers. The run is part of Sutter Tracy Women's Health Fair. S.I. Tracy/Daybreak is passionate about educating the public on the importance of breast cancer. Other Service Projects: Domestic Violence paint the Town Purple by distributing purple notices with Domestic Hot-line numbers printed on them. City of Tracy Beautification. Supplying school uniforms for disadvantaged children and the We Care Project where we supply homeless shelter, etc. with personal care items.
