SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL of ATWATER MAJOR PROGRAMS

Womens Opportunity Award

The Women’s Opportunity Awards program, Soroptimist’s major service project, aids women seeking to improve their economic status by gaining additional skills, training and education. The program helps women who, as the primary wage earners for their families, must improve their employment status by entering or returning to the work force.

Women’s Opportunity Awards applicants have faced severe hardships that have prevented them from pursuing and achieving their educational and professional goals. Most are single mothers and/or reliant on public assistance as their source of income. Many are domestic abuse survivors. The Women’s Opportunity Awards helps these women rebuild their lives through improved employment opportunities.

This unique program supplies women with the resources they need to get ahead. Recipients may use the cash awards to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, including tuition, books, supplies, child care and car fare.

If you know anyone that would like to apply for this award, please email us HERE.

Violet Richardson Award

The Violet Richardson Award is given to young women that have made a difference in the community or at their school Geared to girls between the ages of 14-17, this award recognizes girls that have done outstanding work in their community.

Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence

In October 2004, 413 clubs in six countries (Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Philippines and US) pledged to help victims of domestic violence and raise community awareness—particularly within the business community—as part of the Soroptimist Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence. As a result of this annual campaign, members have distributed tens of thousands of domestic violence hotline cards; others have organized public forums, lobbied governments, and supported domestic violence shelters.

The Soroptimist Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence is an ongoing effort to raise awareness about a seldom-addressed domestic violence issue: domestic violence as a workplace concern. Club participation in the Soroptimist Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence consists of events such as:

  • information about domestic violence as a workplace issue
  • pledge form for clubs to submit to headquarters detailing their support for the campaign
  • suggestions for domestic violence prevention and victim support activities
  • camera-ready hotline cards
  • information about creating workplace domestic violence policies, including why they are important
  • public relations materials, including a sample news release and suggestions for promoting Soroptimist participation in domestic violence prevention and victim support activities
