A project SI Chowchilla are just now undertaking is providing an additional portable chapel at the local Chowchilla District Cemetery. Our cemetery has very few trees and when we have inclement weather or a hot summer day, it is very uncomfortable for the people attending the graveside services, especially the senior citizens or handicapped. The cemetery has one portable chapel at this time that is used for family members. We have contacted the local welder who constructed the original chapel and he will build the new unit. This project is too expensive for our club to handle by ourselves, so we are contacting other service clubs in our community and asking for their assistance. Our club has pledged $1,000 toward the project and we will see that the project is completed.

Soroptimist Playground: We have an ongoing project at the local Sports and Leisure Park in our city. This park opened in 1975 and has baseball fields, soccer fields, a covered picnic area, and a multipurpose building. Around 1980, our club decided to provide a playground at the park. We have added equipment over the period of years and in 1998 the park was enlarged and we provided the second playground with equipment for the younger children. At the sight of the original playground we also provided a covered shelter so parents would have a shaded area to supervise their children’s activities. We have a total of approximately $25,000 invested in equipment and the city has provided a nice sign designating it as the Soroptimist International of Chowchilla Playground.
