SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL of TULARE
COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS

Soroptimist Saturday of Service
"SOS" is a service day held annually on the first Saturday in March, when Soroptimists all over the world offer service in their local communities. In the past, Tulare Soroptimists have volunteered at the Tulare County Asthma Walk and hosted a parking lot sale with proceeds benefiting a local scholarship program for high school girls. This year we helped clean and prep a new Tulare shelter.

Breast Cancer
Tulare Soroptimists have been raising funds for the purchase of a stereotactic breast biopsy machine for Tulare District Hospital. By partnering with other contributors we are close to the goal amount of $200, 000! (See press release below)

S-Clubs are service clubs for high school students. SI Tulare sponsors a club at Tulare Western.

SI Tulare contributes to many community projects such as the Tulare Youth Center, female Police Explorers, Back to School Child Spree, Tulare Junior Miss Scholarship Program and others.

Press release:
TULARE SOROPTIMISTS RAISE FUNDS FOR STEREOTACTIC BREAST BIOPSY MACHINE
September 25, 2006

TULARE, CA – Soroptimist International of Tulare, a volunteer service organization for business and professional women dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world, continues to raise funds for the purchase of a stereotactic breast biopsy machine for Tulare District Hospital.

Soroptimists started the campaign at their annual luncheon in April 2005. At their September business meeting, the Soroptimists of Tulare presented Teresa Menezes, Foundation Director, with another check for $10,000 which will be earmarked for the biopsy machine. The Soroptimists will continue their campaign to raise awareness and funds for this cause at a scheduled luncheon on October 19th. The contributions of the Soroptimists plus other community members that have become aware of the project have brought the proceeds thus far to over $150,000!

Founded in 1947, the Tulare club is part of Soroptimist Internatioanl of the Americas. Tulare members join with almost 100,000 soroptimists in about 120 countries and territories to contribute time and financial support to community-based projects benefiting women. In addition, the club participates in Soroptimist International of the Americas’ major service project, the Women’s Opportunity Awards program-cash grants for women seeking to improve their economic situation through additional training and/or education. For more information about how Soroptimist improves the lives of women and girls, call Amber L. Chatwin, MD at (559) 685-3586. To contribute to the campaign to purchase a steroetactic breast biopsy machine for Tulare District Hospital, please contact Teresa Menezes at (559) 685-3438.
