MEMBERSHIP QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS

There are three types of memberships open to new Soroptimist members. These membership types are: Regular, Retired/Unemployed, and Embarking.

Regular Members
To be eligible for Regular membership in Soroptimist International, a women must be actively engaged in a management or professional capacity, in the private or public sector; or in an occupation with comparable status or comparable responsibilities. This definition of eligibility is the only criteria which must be met to accept an invited prospective member into Soroptimist.

Each Regular member shall have a classification. Members are classified by the primary principal and recognized activity of the firm, company or institution or an independent business or profession that employs the member.

Retired/Unemployed Members
To be eligible for Retired/Unemployed membership in Soroptimist International, a women must have recently retired from, or temporarily or permanently out of work from, a profession or business or an occupation of comparable status or responsibilities to those of a person working in a profession or business (same as a regular member).

Embarking Members
To be eligible for Embarking membership in Soroptimist International, a woman must be embarking on a career in a profession or business or occupation of comparable status or responsibilities to those of a person working in a profession or business (same as a regular member). Embarking members shall also be classified the same as regular members, unless they are enrolled full time in a professional program of study, such as law or medical school.

Expectations
Members are expected to attend club meetings and participate in our service and fundraising projects, as well as serve on club committees of the member’s choice.

NOTE: In the United States and Brazil, because of public accommodation laws, men may be invited to membership. This option is not available to clubs outside of Brazil or the United States since Soroptimist International is a service organization for women in management and the professions.
